his dive story / 42

his-dive-story-42-bThis dive was in the channel. Somewhere between morthwest point and west caicos. The best time to dive the channel is when the tide is high as the reef wall is on a slippery slope so when the tide is receding the current will be unbearable, dragging you down towards the slope and the viz will be bad as all the silt will be kicked up.

Anyway on this dive we were told that this is usually where one would see gurnards, flying fishes but since last year’s hurricane they have seemed to have disappeared!  Well guess what???  I found them on this dive as i went off alone as i usually do a deep profile dive and it was on my way up was when i found these two gurnards.

his-dive-story-42Amazing looking especially when they open their wings and voila! The irresdescent blue spots are just so beautiful but one of them is missing part of its wing or else it was bitten off by another fish. Enjoy the video.

I used my new red filter on this video. Still testing and playing. I have now two INON macro lens that I stack and a new wide angle. Technique technique!!! Ciao and until next time – James

i love this city

lisboaa week in lisbon was definitely too short, i always end up having a lot of chores, like meeting my accountant, going to the dentist, laundry, seamstress…doing all sorts of things we don’t have on island. so it gave me little extra time to see my family and closest friends.

still, it is always worth it, and being in the city itself fills me with energy – so i tried to absorve all of the good things i miss about lisbon – riding on the tram, walking on the sidewalks (called calçadas, they are the most beautiful sidewalks on earth!!), looking at the tiles (azulejos in portuguese) and admiring the views to the tagus river!

the food is always an important component too, and although i always go for fresh fish, shellfish, portuguese pastries, and sushi – there is one favourite spot my portuguese friends know i have to go to – casanova.i-love-this-city-6

i-love-this-city-7it is owned by an italian and located by the river. i’ve been coming here since they opened in 2000, and they have the best pizzas on earth – yes, i feel confident saying it! i like so many of them that i usually order half and half – the casanova, the funghi or the pesto. i love their starters too – the scamorza affumicata, the bresaola, the bruschettas…the home made iced tea is unbeatable, although sometimes i go for the prosecco. and to finish off the panacotta is delicious and light – i know, not in calories though.

oh, life would be so much easier if i had casanova in turks and caicos….

it’s always packed, so it is best to go in between meals.

happy to be home

so you may have seen, on facebook or instagram, that i have been away for the past couple of weeks. i went to back to portugal for my mum’s birthday and we made a trip to florence to celebrate! it was an amazing couple of weeks. but it’s always nice to be back on island.

this morning i went for a beach walk with a friend and her dog, and it felt like the first time i was on this beach. i mean, i enjoyed it so much as if i didn’t take it for granted. and i felt so grateful.

go check out a few more pictures of the beach today HERE.

turks and caicos beaches // the bight

we go to the bight A LOT, and when i say a lot, i mean almost every weekend. it’s our go to next door beach. we like it because it’s a one minute drive from home, it’s easy to access and park, and it’s always almost empty. i call it luxury.

last weekend, it was particularly busy, maybe three other families spread out through the beach. but, because of the gansevoort and the beach house very near, there were a lot of people walking by the beach, and it felt nice, to see the parasailing, someone horseback riding, and a little more action than the usual.

the one thing i don’t like about this beach is, because there are no hotels in it, i don’t think anyone cleans it, so at certain times of the year, there are more algae on the sand than i would like.

ps – a post i did on the bight…too long ago!

bugaloo’s / providenciales

i love how they have rearranged this place, where most people didn’t even know there was such a beautiful site. we come to five cays once in a while, for the banana bread at liz bakery or the lobsters at provo seafood, and we like it because it is so un-touristic.

we’ve been to bugaloo’s a couple of times, first when it opened last year, and then again last week. they keep turtles and bunnies, so kids always have a good time looking around.

conch is their speciality, but last time we tried the cracked lobster and i tell you, it is so, so good. i think the restaurant has been busier than they thought it would, so service can be slow, just make sure you are not in a hurry when coming here. i like it that you meet locals, residents and tourists all in one place too.

for more information, check bugaloo’s facebook page.
