his dive story / 43

It’s me again after a couple of weeks off diving due to a flu and bad sea conditions. In fact, we still have not dived out in Grace Bay at all as the sea has been very rough coming from the north. The water temp has dropped to about 25c and I have been wearing my 7mm suit. I am starting to enjoy using my new camera gear setup and playing with the wide angle lens. I think I need to get the dome next! :)

These pics show the different types of sea creatures we have in abundance. I love the crab. The picture does not do any justice to the size of this crab as it was BIG and missing one giant claw! It was not shy at all and wasn’t bothered that I was trying to get a close up.

The blue and black fishes that you see are really pretty to look at and I have not seen them in a group like that before.

And then those baby blue parrot fishes are definitely feeding off the corals. They are so cool to watch when they swim together in a big group.

Enjoy and until next time, hopefully, we will get to dive Grace Bay again.

island fish fry

last week we headed to the bight for dinner at the weekly fish fry, we had heard so much about it, we were dying to try it out.

the fish fry is a new event, held every thursday, organized by the tourist board and lime, and featuring local music and food.

there was music, dance – and my favourite, junkanoo – and food stalls from most of the island restaurants featuring local food – fried fish, cracked conch, jerk chicken or fried lobster with rice and peas, mac and cheese, corn on the cob or fried plantain.

it was packed, with locals, residents and tourists, so i recommend going early.

head over for more pictures and also a great post on the weekly fish fry.

two years in turks and caicos

two years ago today, i first arrived to provo, and i had no idea what awaited me. honestly, my first year was not easy, too many island life expectations to manage – and the thought that it would be easier than anyone told me. i felt isolated, island life was way too quiet and i missed the buzz of city life. not to mention, that i was now living in a more than 24 hours away from home, in a new place with no family or friends, other than my – fiancé at the time – james.

but time heals everything, and by the end of my first year i came to realized how lucky i am, to have this opportunity – living so close to the sea, in such a beautiful island, with a quality of life i would not have in many other places, getting to know new friends from different cultures, and experiencing what most of my friends and family from back home would dream of.

i am enjoying life here and try to make the most of it every day… after all, i can’t complain. THANK YOU TURKS AND CAICOS, for two wonderful years, filled with special moments, and for teaching me so much. i am ready for more!!

ps – my post a year ago today, if you would like to read my thoughts at the time.

provo friends // stacie

this is the first post on a new series about island life, but instead of having me tell you about it, i invite other bloggers and provo friends to share their views on turks and caicos – hope you enjoy it. oh, and I’m so flattered to have Stacie posting today, her blog was the first one i found about life in provo and was such an inspiration.

Stacie here from Pepper&Pikey.  I moved to the Turks and Caicos Islands almost a decade ago in April of 2003.  I arrived on a set design contract, thinking I would be living the island life for a short six months.  Within a week I had met a tall, green-eyed cabinetmaker from Quebec, and destiny made other plans!  While google searching for images while planning our wedding three years ago, I stumbled into the wonderful world of blogs and infatuation developed instantly.  Here was a gateway to travel to distant lands, read incredible stories, collect ideas, gain knowledge in any area of interest, and be inspired, every single day while sipping my morning tea.  I began to blog myself first and foremost as a creative outlet and advertising tool, but also as a way to share insights about the island, and, let’s be honest, to validate my addiction to my favorite blogs!

why do you love living in provo – The first image illustrates why I love living in the Turks and Caicos.  This photo was taken at one of my favorite places on Provo, Southwest Bluff.

what are your favourite things to do on island on your weekends, days off? – Favorite things to do with free time? Swim, sail, explore!

where would you take  friend who came to visit just for a weekend? – Where would I take a friend if they only had the weekend?  My adventurous and nature enthusiast friends I would take to North and Middle Caicos, a full day bicycle tour that would include stops at Wade’s Green Plantation, Conch Bar Caves, and a picnic at Mudjin Harbor.  My history loving friends I would take to Grand Turk to be charmed by the people, the place.  An essential for any visitor of ours is getting out on the water, via boat or board, to experience being surrounded in every direction by that unforgettable blue.

The second and third images are from Mudjin Harbor, Middle Caicos in 2010 and the fourth image was taken at the Turks Head Mansion, Grand Turk in 2008.

thank you stacie, for sharing a piece of turks and caicos through your eyes!
