his dive story

The island experienced a boating accident a few months back and many resorts started to request to have swim buoys installed in front of their resorts and fix, if needed, their boat lane markers. For those not from the TCI, as part of the deficit containment initiative, the government earlier in the year had slashed many workers from various agencies, one being the Department of Environment and Coastal Resources (DECR) which was eventually merged with the Department of Environment and Maritime Affairs. Under DEMA, there exist a shortage of resources both in man power and equipment. At the Grace Bay Club where I work, we recognized this issue and decided to purchase our own buoys and boat lane markers with the help of Vikram, our project manager, to help DEMA but more importantly to help protect our guests and local residents who come to the public beach in front of our resort.

With the help of Provo’s Zero Tolerance Committee under Mike Bookalam, Caribbean Security Services (Mr. Simmons of CSS), Beaches Resort (for the tanks and dive gears), and of course DEMA (Paul Dickenson), we started the project. Evan, our beach supervisor, and I volunteered to help as the job requires at least 5 individuals as you will see from the video. 3 in the water and 2 on the surface including the boat captain.   it’s tedious and time consuming work….

Drilling in front of Grace Bay Beach is not so easy as there is a rock plate underneath and sometimes will not go all the way in. It was a hit and miss case many times as we were looking around for what we think is soft sand to drill. My responsibility was to maintain the buoyancy of the lift bag as it holds the machine afloat and release the air as needed to apply downward pressure as we are drilling. Of course, I had to make sure the machine does it drop on Paul!

While doing this, in between breaks, I was able to dive around and saw some nice and big starfish… Paul and I also saw something that we will most likely never see again any time soon…while we were drilling, we saw a big crab run towards the pin and suddenly grab something from underneath the sand. We both followed it and realized that it was a mother crab taking its young away from the drilling to safety. We stopped drilling and I followed her to video her with her baby.  Enjoy it!

a good week ahead

i hope you had a great weekend – i can’t believe we’re already in july and half of the year has gone through!

we had an awesome one, trying to enjoy the island whilst we plan our vacation in portugal for september. on saturday we spent a great day at the crab fest in middle caicos – will share some pictures with you later this week. also, we had a look at a new boutique hotel that just opened in provo (beach house) it’s near home and the restaurant menus look promising, so we look forward to trying it.

we’ve been going for sunset dives on the beach lately, which remind us of how thankful we should be to live here.

have an amazing week – more posts on our trip to come soon!

turks and caicos beaches // grace bay beach

when we first moved to provo, we stayed in a house right on the beach, so we got up early and went for a beach walk before work. we were so grateful for our new life.

then we moved to a new place, but a 5 minute walk from the beach, so the morning walks stopped…

and lately i have forced myself to go back to that routine. provo has amazing things –  being close to the beach + good weather + no traffic = no excuses! i would love to share a few pictures of my morning walks at grace bey beach.

i start off at grace bay club and only this gets me in a good mood!

i then head east, towards pelican beach – i see the tourists arriving to the beach from their resorts. the early birds are the ones with kids, or if they are leaving on a day out on the boat. there are a lot of people walking and running too.

i always have to stop at the coral house, it’s the most beautiful house in provo, with no one to see near it and a gorgeous strip of beach right in front.

on the way back i am tired, the sun is usually warmer, but i feel happy to have started the day achieving something!

a very special guest post ~ carleth & adrian

carleth and adrian are close friends, and, the cutest couple. as i’ve mentioned before (here), and luckily for me, they got married here in provo. i was flattered to know they had never been in turks and caicos and fell in love with the island through myseastory! i asked carleth to share a few thoughts on their special wedding weekend on island…

My dream was to get married on the most beautiful beach in the world, and it became true on May 26th.

It was a risk to organize a wedding at a place we had never been to, and most of our guests had never even heard of, but like someone once told me before: “with Turks & Caicos, you can never go wrong”. And so we did. We mobilized over 80 people from different corners of the planet, with the promise of paradise.

Grace Bay Beach exceeded our expectations and, on Memorial Day weekend, its turquoise waters created memories that will forever bond our eclectic and multicultural group.

It was a hot afternoon on May 26th, but nobody cared. Sweating on the dance floor of Bay Bistro was the perfect excuse for our friends to cool off in the water under the bright moon.

It was the happiest weekend of our lives, not only because we sealed our love for each other, but because of the wonderful activities in the island: the boat ride, the conch fishing, the snorkeling, the parasailing, the rum punch and the tasty fish tacos at Somewhere Café, all of which printed huge smiles on the faces of our loved ones.

One of our friends asked us if we will return to Provo one day, and we answered yes. “Maybe for our first anniversary” and he replied: “can we all tag along again??”

friends

my long weekend began on thursday, when more than 80 friends and family came for  my friends’ wedding, here in provo. they are all staying at the sibonne hotel, having the hotel and beach all for themselves! we started with a welcome bbq at grace bay beach, a day out on the boat snorkeling and eating conch, and a fun rehearsal dinner watching the sunset at somewhere.

it’s great to have friends over, celebrate their special day and meet their wonderful guests who have come from all over the world, new york, spain, denmark and so on. since the bride is venezuelan and the groom is spanish i get to practice my spanish too! plus, i really get to enjoy the island, as if i were on vacation myself!

today is the big day and i can’t wait to see the beautiful bride and groom getting married on our beach!

this has been a truly fun weekend to remember.

hoping you all have an amazing weekend as well!
