i was at the beach last weekend with james and our dear brazilian friend gisele and we were talking about how many people we knew from our own country living on island. provo has lot’s of american, canadian, british and french expats – portuguese, brazilian and vietnamese are not so common. when you live abroad, in such a secluded place, you get really surprised when you know that someone from your country lives nearby.
james was proud to be the only vietnamese in provo, and assumed he would never find another vietnamese living here…he was so wrong – just one day later, when we went to lay out in our pool, we met a vietnamese neighbour who lives in our own condo! Totally unexpected!
ps – i know of 5 other portuguese people living in provo, i haven’t met them all but i can’t wait! gisele knows of 4 other brazilian and they are all close friends.
irene is scheduled to pass through turks and caicos tomorrow (tuesday) at 8pm local time. it was a tropical storm and has been upgraded to a category one hurricane. i’ve never before experienced a hurricane so didn’t quite know how “things work”, and this is how it’s been so far;
the island was packed this morning, there was traffic everywhere, believe me this is so unusual, momentarilly i felt i was in a city! most petrol stations were closed as they ran out of petrol and the ones still open had neverending cues. we were advised to keep everything inside the house, furniture, bbq’s and anything that could fly with the wind, to make sure it will not make any damages. luckily our place has hurricane proof windows so we don’t need to board them up and our home is a safe shelter. our mobile company texted us advising to top up our phones, in case we have to do without internet and phone connection for a couple of days. we are also advised to stock up our pantry, staple food and water. ships with food containers for hotels and supermarkets will probably not be coming on island on the next days, the flights have been canceled and the airport is closed.unfortunately not everyone has a safe home – some hotels welcome their staff and families to shelter safely at work.

i hope you had a fantastic weekend. mine involved lots of organizing, as we will be having our first visitors at home by the end of the week – so we had to make sure that there were no more unpacked boxes around.
we had an amazing day at the beach, and of course, an awesome diving day out for james, and this time with great company!
every time james comes from diving i can’t wait to see his pictures to post – i am loving these ones!
have you ever lost your jewellery at the beach?
during my first days in provo i spent a lot of time at grace bay beach, and remember seeing a man with a metal detector passing by all the time.
i have now found his website, he looks for lost jewellery and tries to return it to the owners by posting it on his website! How nice is that!
Read here for the stories of returned jewellery!
