magasin cafe / new orleans

magasin-cafe-by-myseastory-3one of the reasons james was excited about moving to new orleans, was the variety of vietnamese food available, he craves it all the time and, if possible, would eat it every day. he also likes hole in the wall type of restaurants, but to be honest that’s just not my thing (let’s keep it real, folks!). so when we found magasin cafe, a modern vietnamese restaurant, located just a few blocks from our house, we hit jackpot finding a good compromise for both.

we come here for a meal at least once a week, it’s usually easy to get a table and the staff are super friendly, so we kind of feel like at home. it’s also very kid friendly, and that’s how we roll these days :)

magasin-cafe-by-myseastory-1when i like a certain dish, i find it difficult to be adventurous, so i always order the same thing – vermicelli (rice noodles with lettuce, cabbage, mint, bean sprouts and peanuts) with grilled pork or sometimes grilled shrimp – filling, yet light and delicious.

(there are of course a ton of other things he likes and craves, this is just a ‘sample’)magasin-cafe-by-myseastory-4magasin-cafe-by-myseastory-5

oh, and i’m a big fan of their vietnamese iced coffee, cafe sua da, so sweet and very refreshing (remember my first new orleans picture?)

also, they’ve just recently opened magasin kitchen, their new restaurant in new orlean’s central business district. i haven’t had the chance to try, but it looks pretty cool too.

colour love in new orleans

new-orleans-colours-by-myseastory-10in our neighbourhood, uptown new orleans, most houses have subtle colours like grey, beige and mauve (like this one). but as you drive east, towards the marigny and bywater area, you can see a lot of caribbean influences, the houses burst in colour (like these ones), and i’m totally obsessed with these combinations.

her introduction to donuts and first chocolate milk – she licked all the chocolate and left the donut for me. also, luckily the milk tasted like delicious creamy milk, with a hint of chocolate…we don’t want any more chocolate addicts in the house (like me)!

about mardi gras

mardi-gras-by-myseastory-3i’m no mardi gras expert, but was lucky to experience it for the first time this year, as a local, or sort of – and let me tell you a few things about it:

the energy in the city overall is amazing, everyone is happy and in good moods, locals, and tourists alike, are riding their bikes (yes, traffic gets hectic too and impossible to find a parking spot), the houses are all decorated with the mardi gras colours (purple, green and gold), everyone’s having parties and eating king cake, and there’s music all over.

and some news

and-some-news

we’re moving, friends, yes, again, and this time to north california – and berkeley it is! we’ve known for a couple of weeks now, but to be honest it’s been so hectic on this side of the hood, that i hadn’t made it a point to sit, plan and share.

if you haven’t heard about it, it’s where the university of berkeley is located – a city in the east shore of the san francisco bay, actually directly opposite to the golden gate!! they say the weather in the summer is similar to typically mediterranean, but with foggy nights and mornings. and if you know me, i’ve been doing my research around instagram and blogger’s tips, and there’s some really cool restaurants, coffee shops and more.

we’re sad to leave this amazing city, so lucky to have lived here for the past months and experience mardi gras as locals too. sometimes life surprises us, we’ve been really happy in new orleans, but we’re always excited for new adventures.

i still have a lot to share about our life here and our favorite spots, so bare with me and follow along here for live updates.

ps – i guess i’ll be putting these into practice again
