his dive story

In planning for our trips to Cuba and the Yucatan Peninsula, Joana asked me if I wanted to do some diving??? Hello??? Well, you know the answer… I tried to book in La Habana but we didn’t have enough time and it was far from the city as you had to travel down to an island in the south where they have reputed government run dive shops. So my best chance of diving was in Tulum at the end of our Yucatan trip.

I knew I wanted to try cenote diving (cave) and made sure to bring my FAMI umbilical torch and dive computer. Our hotel recommended Kay-Op Dive Club which was right in town because they were safe and more importantly, a wholly owned Mexican operator.

I met Carlos who was going to take me to a well known cenote called Dos Ojos which comprises of two different cave dives lasting roughly 45-50 minutes. He was very experienced and talked a lot about safety and technical diving. I told him that I was also a technical diver, IANTD Trimix Diver, to be precise and it was enough said… the dives were amazing and clear as ever as it was fresh water. Nothing prepared me for this experience. Sure I have done caves in Malta and in Sagres, Portugal but this was very different. The viz was as far as your torch can reach.

The videos are two, which I liked most. The one in the tunnel was just out of this world! Not for the faint of heart for sure. Your buoyancy has to be spot on and I was glad I did not have other divers with me as for sure the silt would have been kicked up. It was just Carlos and me! How lucky I was…The second one is just to show you how absolutely beautiful it was with all the stalactites and crevices… you can explore so much if you know what you are doing and trained for it. Technical divers can dive from one cenote to another. Great times I had! – James

The sea is always full of life, colours and shapes. It’s just incredible how nature creates all these things. Every dive I go on is different in what I “happen” to see as there is so much. My favs are the brain corals and sponges.

Enjoy some of the colours and shapes.

Well, I had another great dive this past Sunday at Northwest Point. Lately, I have been diving with Sarah, an instructor, who is coming out on Sundays for recreational diving only.

Funny enough we both are practicing taking photos with our cameras and strobe and learning as we go. I discovered that I could actually add more red to my underwater pics by adjusting the WB which I am only discovering now after 3 years! Anyway, enjoy the turtle, lobster and the shark. I am compiling some macro pics for next week!

Hi everyone, I’m back!

There are times when I wish I hadn’t gone diving as the weather, yes, does get bad and worse, there is no sunshine! Well this past Sunday was amazing…. It was by far one the best days in a couple of months and mind you I only go on Sundays….

Dave, the boat captain and owner of Provo Turtles, asked me where I wanted to go and I said Northwest Point and that was it. There was only 5 of us on the boat which is GREAT!

Our first dive as at a site called two steps and I went deep (42m) and got narc…. What a great feeling! The second dive didn’t have a name and it was near the canyons. We all jumped in and it was an amazing dive with great viz but it was at the end of the dive that made it all worthwhile for all of us….

We came upon a group of tiny red squids and they were not shy and loved the attention from all of us, especially the ones with cameras. We were all obsessed with getting that perfect shot! And so here are mine including a short video… enjoy!

his dive story

The other day, we were diving at French Cay and it has been a long time since I have been there as it is a long trip from South Dock.

It’s April and I was able to witness the various corals shooting out sperms and seeds creating a mist on the reef wall which made the viz poor.

I also had company on this dive.  Joana’s sis Ines from Lisbon was doing her OWD and she had a great time even when a shark came straight at her!
